One of the most complete trips in Peru is the one that goes through the wonders of the Amazon Region ending with a visit to the Kuelap fortress, called the “City of Clouds” for its magical enclave dominating the top of the mountain.
This year Kuelap has been included in the prestigious list of the New York Times “52 places to visit in 2018” with the 29th place, highlighting once again the relevance and beauty of this city called “The Machu Picchu of the North“.
In this tour we will also see magnificent landscapes with a great variety of flora and fauna, as well as other attractions such as the Gocta falls, considered the third highest in the world or the enigmatic sarcophagi of Karajía.
Dare to get to know one of the fashionable destinations of 2018.
Our staff will be waiting for you at the Shumba airport in Jaén, to transfer you to Chachapoyas in our special service “Chachapoyas Premium Service“.
We will take the afternoon free to visit the hotel facilities and get to know the beautiful surroundings of the establishment.
We start our journey early towards the village of Cruz Pata, from where we will start a journey of about half an hour (on foot or taking a horse) to the funerary complex of Karajía.
Here we will witness the impressive and enigmatic Sarcophagus of Karajía, which belonged to the Pre-Inca Chachapoyas culture and are made of materials such as stone, wood or clay. These sarcophagi are anthropomorphic and are more than 2.5 metres high, still retaining some mummies inside thanks to the fact that they are on top of a rocky formation.
We will continue our route to the caves of Quiocta, an authentic jewel that is located at 2,793 meters above sea level, in the province of Luya. We will be able to go inside these caverns and get to know the different kinds of stalactites and stalagmites that have been created over hundreds of years.
After recharging our batteries with a good breakfast we will begin our third day by going to the community of San Pablo Valera, from where we will be able to go to see the famous Gocta Falls, the third highest in the world.
Its drop is 771 meters high and is the habitat of diverse species of animals such as toucans, monkeys, or the cockerel of the rocks, emblem of the region.
The environment of the Gocta is another of the natural attractions of the place, as it is located in a large cloud forest where up to twenty more waterfalls are located.
After getting to know the Gocta Falls we will go back to San Pablo to have for lunch some of the typical dishes of the area.
This morning we woke up early to see the jewel of the Amazon region and one of the most fashionable destinations in the world: the fortress of Kuelap.
On the way to the famous “Ciudad de las Nubes” we can have a beautiful view of the Macro Archaeological Complex, also called “Torres de Macro” because it is on the slopes of the Utcubamba River.
Upon arriving at Nuevo Tingo we will take a bus to the recently inaugurated cable car, which in a few minutes will take us to the starting point to get to know Kuelap. The climb up to the top of Cerro Barreta (where the fortress is located) can be done on foot or on horseback.
The recent highlighting of this architectural enclave has made that several specialized magazines have put their eyes on Kuelap when offering it as ruins unique in the world for its appearance and location.
On the way back to Chachapoyas we will make a stop for lunch in Choctamal.
We will start today by visiting the town of San Bartolo, from where we will begin our journey to the Mausoleums of Revash, a group of houses carved on a rocky wall at 2,800 meters above sea level that had as their objective to protect the bodies of leaders of the Chachapoyas culture.
After getting to know these curious funeral structures, we will stop for lunch and then head to the Museum of Centro Mallqui or Museo de Leymebamba, with a design that mimics local traditions.
In addition to its beautiful environment (where there are up to 100 varieties of orchids) inside the museum we can see a collection of up to 240 mummies that were found in the Laguna de los Cóndores.
The city of Chachapoyas has a colonial legacy that comes from the viceroyalty and has left architectural works of great beauty. The Chachapoyas City Tour begins in the beautiful Plaza de Burgos until you reach Plaza de Armas, which still preserves beautiful colonial balconies.
We will continue to visit the Municipal Palace, the Cathedral of the mid-nineteenth century, and then to take a bus to the Mirador de Luya Urco. We will not fail to visit the pottery women of the village of Huancas and from there go to the lookout point of Huanca Hurco, a privileged place to see the Gocta Falls and the Town of the Dead.
After visiting the most famous viewpoints of the surroundings, we will be able to finish the tour by elaborating our own craftsmanship with the settlers of a traditional house in the area.
The end of the tour will take us back to our hotel in the city of Chachapoyas.
Our adventure ends after having a refreshing breakfast and recapitulating the visit to one of the most fascinating places in Peru. In addition to our visit we can take with us handicraft pieces from the region or its popular coffee, a whole world of flavor for the connoisseurs of this popular grain.
Our service “Chachapoyas Premium Service” will take you to Jaén to transfer you to the airport back to Lima.
